EAST is an educational model that gives students an
opportunity to do community service projects utilizing technology (most often
environmental and geospatial). EAST at Martin Luther King Elementary Magnet serves students in 3rd - 5th grade in
sessions once or twice a week. Learn more about EAST at http://www.eastproject.org/ and King EAST at

Reading Partners Needed for Tutorials (September - October)
Students are utilizing their EAST time to complete a regular class assignment with their teacher (3rd-City Photo Story http://eastatking.blogspot.com/2012/10/amazing-facts-about-my-city.html; 4th-State Poster Board and Power Point; 5th-Native American Brochure) as individual groups/teams rotate to the EAST Facilitator for EAST Orientation (What is EAST, EAST Procedures, Project Ideas, etc.).
Partners are needed to read and guide students through software tutorials. Many students are reading below grade level and the tutorials may be 8th grade level or higher. Tutorials could be read through with individual students or with use of sound and Smartboard with an entire class. Students may ask questions if not understanding or if problems, etc. We will utilize recordings to review or share audio tutorials with students/classes that miss the live session. After reading through tutorials, students can be rotated to reading parnters to ask for help with research, writing, proofreading, and editing.
Warning: Students need encouragement on summarizing and paraphrasing their research versus copying and pasting information from the Internet into their product (this is something that I have to warn the teachers about also). If you see this problem in a student's work, please encourage them to summarize and paraphrase as much as possible. Information that is not summarized or paraphrased should have quotation marks (see link: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/563/1/).
