Visit From EAST Yields Invitation for Student Leader

This past month, King EAST had a visitor from EAST headquarters. The visitor met with various students about their projects and the EAST Facilitator concerning the overall program and future sustainability. During the visit, one group and their team leader made a lasting impression. The group members included: Brennan, Taylor, Jeremy, Melvon, Terriyonna, Cameron, and Brittney from Mrs. Fletcher's Class, and they are working on an animation of Brennan and the Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Night: A Story About Coping. The project utilizes Google Sketchup, Microsoft Power Point, GarageBand, and an undecided movie editing software. If the group finishes the project, Brennan has an opportunity to represent the team this summer during Phase training for new EAST Facilitators. His visit would contribute ideas of what type of projects elementary students can accomplish in EAST.

Adopt-A-Garden Spot

Have you noticed the green growing near the playground and near the sidewalk in the grassy area behind the library tunnel. We've been growing sugar snap peas, various greens including spinach, zucchini, and more. The EAST class would love for individuals, groups, and classes to adopt-a-garden spot. The spot could be an entire bed or even half a bed that the sponsor would plant, maintain, and harvest (as applicable). EAST students would create a lovely marker with the donor's name or designated name. Also, we are in immediate need of lumber for additional beds to spread out items and a support system for the tomatoes planted by the city as part of the Little Rock Serves: Love Your School Project. We would love to receive donations of items or select volunteer time in which the EAST Classroom can adopt-a-bed in the honor of the volunteer/donor's choice.

Penny Drive Winners Announced

Mrs. Harris' 5th Grade Penny Drive Team would like to give a special thanks to the classes that raised the most in this year's penny drive:

Let's Move Too

The Let’s Move Flash Dance was held May 3, 2011 for select middle schools to help encourage increasing physical activity and staying healthy. Students in Mrs. May's 5th Grade EAST Class decided that they want to move too. Team members have learned the national dance and are teaching other students on select days at lunch recess. They hope to have a special performance of the dance during King’s Next Top Model (EAST Fashion and Talent Show highlighting Juvenile Diabetes).

Cartridges to Carepacks

The Green Team in Mrs. Cagle's Class helped collect, count, and load over 245 toner and printer cartridges. The cartridges have been taken to Cartridge World and the exchange will allow 16-20 troops to receive care pack from Avon (hygiene products and a personal note from King EAST). The proceeds from the purchase of the packs will benefit the USO.

Neither Rain, Sleet or Snow

For months, the King EAST Running and Walking Team has been looking forward to the Little Rockers Marathon but hadn't checked the weather. Only one team member showed up on the rainy race day, Timiya (pictured with medal and certificate). All students that registered received their Little Rockers T-shirt.
