King Receives EAST After Hours Grant

M. L. King Elementary EAST recently received an EAST After Hours Grant to fund King EAST Young Preservationist Mapping and 3D Workshops. The project developed from the Fraternal Cemetery/PAAC Project started in 2008 to help increase the awareness of cemetery preservation/historical importance to youth, particularly African-American youth because of their low participation in visiting cemeteries. The project resulted in the establishment of PAAC Jr. Preservation Society, and KEYP is working to build membership at the school as a model in the state through recruitment of youth as trainers and co-developers in Historical Mapping and 3D Book Workshops for local PAAC society members and teachers participating in the Little Rock School District History Academy. From October 2011 to January 2012, EAST students will be training in Augmented Reality, ArcGIS and working with select participants to co-develop examples for the planned workshops.

LRSD History Academy Workshop Dates
January - April, 2012 (Reserved 1 Hr. Sessions)

Community Workshop
February 10, 2012, 8:30-12:30 (Tentative)

This EAST After Hours project is funded by the Enhancing Education Through Technology grant made possible by the Arkansas Department of Education and is done in cooperation with the Southeast Educational Service Cooperative and the EAST Initiative. Also, with a contribution from Preservation of African-American Cemeteries, Inc.

Visit From EAST Yields Invitation for Student Leader

This past month, King EAST had a visitor from EAST headquarters. The visitor met with various students about their projects and the EAST Facilitator concerning the overall program and future sustainability. During the visit, one group and their team leader made a lasting impression. The group members included: Brennan, Taylor, Jeremy, Melvon, Terriyonna, Cameron, and Brittney from Mrs. Fletcher's Class, and they are working on an animation of Brennan and the Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Night: A Story About Coping. The project utilizes Google Sketchup, Microsoft Power Point, GarageBand, and an undecided movie editing software. If the group finishes the project, Brennan has an opportunity to represent the team this summer during Phase training for new EAST Facilitators. His visit would contribute ideas of what type of projects elementary students can accomplish in EAST.

Adopt-A-Garden Spot

Have you noticed the green growing near the playground and near the sidewalk in the grassy area behind the library tunnel. We've been growing sugar snap peas, various greens including spinach, zucchini, and more. The EAST class would love for individuals, groups, and classes to adopt-a-garden spot. The spot could be an entire bed or even half a bed that the sponsor would plant, maintain, and harvest (as applicable). EAST students would create a lovely marker with the donor's name or designated name. Also, we are in immediate need of lumber for additional beds to spread out items and a support system for the tomatoes planted by the city as part of the Little Rock Serves: Love Your School Project. We would love to receive donations of items or select volunteer time in which the EAST Classroom can adopt-a-bed in the honor of the volunteer/donor's choice.

Here is a detailed list of items recommended by our partner Mrs. Warren, Master Gardener:

lumber
brackets
screws
irrigation timer
micro tubing
water hoses
splitter
fittings
field trip
fresh produce
wagon
tool shed
tools
plants
seeds
baskets
garden guide
cypress mulch

Please submit your comments or questions to kingeast@gaggle.net.

Let's Move Too

The Let’s Move Flash Dance was held May 3, 2011 for select middle schools to help encourage increasing physical activity and staying healthy. Students in Mrs. May's 5th Grade EAST Class decided that they want to move too. Team members have learned the national dance and are teaching other students on select days at lunch recess. They hope to have a special performance of the dance during King’s Next Top Model (EAST Fashion and Talent Show highlighting Juvenile Diabetes).

Cartridges to Carepacks

The Green Team in Mrs. Cagle's Class helped collect, count, and load over 245 toner and printer cartridges. The cartridges have been taken to Cartridge World and the exchange will allow 16-20 troops to receive care pack from Avon (hygiene products and a personal note from King EAST). The proceeds from the purchase of the packs will benefit the USO.

Neither Rain, Sleet or Snow

For months, the King EAST Running and Walking Team has been looking forward to the Little Rockers Marathon but hadn't checked the weather. Only one team member showed up on the rainy race day, Timiya (pictured with medal and certificate). All students that registered received their Little Rockers T-shirt.

Lego and Robotics Club Finally A Reality

The Lego and Robotics Club (Nichols' 5th Grade Leadership Team) finally received a mindstorm kit to prepare for possible competition next year. Many students involved in the project have been expressing interest in lego and robotics for over 2 years. Finally, the school assistant principal heard about their interests and made the project a reality.

Their second poster includes assistance from two 5th Grade artists (Diago and Cassiepea) and Jade, one of the students who participated in Adobe Photoshop Training this school year. The team hopes to complete the project before the school year ends and if not pass it on to fourth grade students that can submit the poster for EAST Conference next year.

King EAST Hosts First Annual Basketball Competition

In Mrs. Harris's 5th Grade Class, a group of girls wanted to help pets and a group of boys wanted to have a basketball competition to benefit a charity. The facilitator suggested they join forces. After submitting proposals to the school principal and presenting to the PTA Fall Fest Committee, Points 4 Paws/Caring 4 Animals joined forces to impact over 200 students and adults at the PTA sponsored Fall Fest through a basketball competition and by dispersing brochures and information cards about pet adoption through Care For Animals and listed regulations concerning pets in the City of Little Rock. The groups hope to have a Spring Event with basketball and a week of activities devoted to pets.
